What is counselling?
Counselling is a service, which offers the
opportunity to discuss
thoughts and feelings on
matters of concern. People
seek counselling forwide variety of reasons.
Sometimes they have
problems, which have become
unmanageable,
while other times they have feelings of
dissatisfaction or unhappiness in life.
Counselling can help reach a new perspective or
regain the confidence that for one reason
or another has become lost.
What happens in counselling?
Counselling is not the same as giving advice. A
counsellor seeks to help you to focus on,
and understand more clearly,
issues that concern you. By respecting your own values,
choices, and lifestyle, the
counsellor can work together with
you, towards making choices or
changes that are right for you. Counselling may be concerned
with developmental issues,
addressing and resolving personal insight and knowledge,
working through feelings of inner conflict or
improving relationships with
others. The overall aim of
counselling is to provide an opportunity
to work towards a way that is more satisfying and resourceful.
The counsellor's role is to
facilitate the work in a way, which respects the
values, personal resources, and
capacity for choice within
the person's cultural context.
